Should I feed a baby skunk that I found

In the spring season, you are quite likely to find a baby skunk inside your house or your property especially in case you live near the woods. However, before taking matters into your own hands, you must first make sure if the baby skunk does actually need your help. In case the baby skunk is not an orphan and has simply wandered away from the nest, all that you need to do is to find the nest and to return it. It may also be likely that the mother skunk is nearby and may see you as a threat to the baby. The first step would be to bring the skunk in so that it is safe from predators around, and has a warm place to stay in. Prepare a cardboard box with a soft towel as a bedding for the skunk to rest in, and let the bedding inside a warm room. Warmth is extremely important for a baby skunk without which they cannot survive. Usually, they get the warmth from their mother but since it appears to be an orphan, you will have to do something about it.

Next, you will need to get the correct hydration solution. Pedialyte, which is available in most of the drug stores is a suitable choice in this case. Once you have prepared the solution in heated water, let the heated water return to its normal temperature before feeding it to the baby skunk. Continue feeding the solution to the baby skunk until you are sure that the skunk is no longer dehydrated.

For feeding the Knoxville skunk, it is highly advised to make use of a syringe. Also, you will have to be very careful about the rate with which the baby is sucking from the syringe. You certainly do not want to choke the baby skunk. Also, skunks are known to have big appetites. So it may continue eating for as long as you are feeding it. Ensure that the baby skunk does not get overfed.

Feeding the baby Tennessee skunk using Esbilac powder is a nice solution. It is the perfect replacement for milk and can be found on any veterinary store or pet store. In case the baby skunk leaves some of it behind, make sure to cover it up and to put it away in the refrigerator to prevent the solution from catching germs.

In the meantime, give a call to your nearest wildlife rehabilitation center so that preparations of the skunk’s safe transportation to the wildlife center can be made. After all, it will thrive better in the hands of an expert and trained caretakers.

You may as well add some supplements including calcium, taurine, and vitamin D to the diet of this baby skunk. These supplements can be obtained via drug stores. However, you must receive some guidance regarding the quantities that you have to feed to these animals. If it is an absolute emergency in case of a starving baby skunk, an animal rehabilitator on the call could guide you really well.

Do note that you cannot feed baby skunks milk formulas from cows or other pet products as they can be dangerous enough to cause death.
